If you have a Kroger (or Kroger-related store) nearby, you likely have heard of their Simple Truth Brand. It touts that it is free from 101 artificial preservatives ingredients. Wow, 101! That sounds pretty great, right? And, I agree, it’s a fantastic start to eating healthier foods. That’s a huge list of things I don’t have to worry about when purchasing Simple Truth items. There’s a few things missing from the list that I wish were there, such as “natural flavors” (since I don’t know that is…it could be anything), carrageenan, maltodextrin, guar gum, and xantham gum, just to name a few.
However, my biggest concern is that a lot of the non-organic products may contain unlabeled GMO’s. Many of the Simple Truth (non-organic) products have soy or canola oil listed in the ingredients. Pretty much all corn and canola used in the USA is genetically modified. You can only guarantee that it is not if it is an organic product and/or if it is labeled as non-GMO verified.
Therefore, when buying Simple Truth items, I personally will stick to Simple Truth Organic products. And, I always review the label before purchasing. Don’t just grab the item blindly and assume it’s ok just because it says Simple Truth. Make sure the ingredient list lives up to your family’s standards.
